My friends were talking about maybe taking a Carnival cruise and used the words total choice dining. I've heard about fixed seats and that on cruise ships. What is this about? Do I need to wear a suit to dinner at night? How does this work on a cruise ship?

Not sure about Carnival but we always look forwards to the formal nights on the cruises that still have them. My wife loves it. Matter of fact she just made me get a tuxedo today for our next cruise in February on Celebrity!

I believe total choice dining refers to the variety of dining options available on Carnival. For those with kids, casual dining always works. They offer pizza, ice cream, and buffets with lots of other food choices. The buffets are even open at midnight! I think there are also children's menus. For those who want to dress up, there is sophisticated dining that is suppose to be first class. The supper club offers intimate dining and food items such as steak and seafood. I think there are also delis and cafes on board. Hope this helps!

I've never heard the terms that you mentioned, but Carnival has about 8 millions options when it comes to food! :) On the first night, you're assigned your table as well as the time you eat - early or late. We preferred late seating because that allowed us the maximum time in port before we had to run back for dinner. You do need to look nice to eat in the dining room each night, but it's basically business casual as long as it's not a formal night. We didn't do the formal nights, so I can't tell you anything about those.

They have a number of choices for dinner each night, and if you like, you can order several of them. If my DH and I couldn't decide, we'd get two entrees each and try them all. Not to worry, we didn't waste food since my DH eats a lot!

As another poster mentioned, they also have a deli, a grill and a pizza bar. You'll definitely want to eat in the dining room - it's a great experience - but there are other options for you too. There's lots of flexibility.

Good luck!

We started out eating in the dining room for dinner everynight. We ordered room service for breakfast and grabbed a light lunch someplace else on the boat.

I think we had lunch in the dining room once, but honestly - it's too much food!

Eating is not a problem on a cruise!
