My best friend lived in Tortola for 18 years and while I only managed to get over to visit once, I'm soooo glad I went.
The island is beautiful - stunningly so - but what really did it for me was the beaches. Evidently they've been voted the best beaches in the Caribbean (and that's saying something!) and I'm sure anybody who's been will agree that this is one accolade they deserve.
Cane Garden Bay beach was without doubt the most fabulous of them all. Luckily, my friend lived just a short drive away so we got to visit this particular beach several times during our stay. It just seems to go on forever and the sea is so clear it really has to be seen to be believed. Being one of the Island's favorite anchorage points means there's lots going on both on and around the beach, during the day and in the evening. There's no excuse for being bored!
There are plenty of smaller, lesser known, beaches around too. I can't remember the name (if I was ever told) but we went to a smaller beach that's mostly used by the natives that was a real charm. Although not deserted, it was certainly far from packed so there was a tranquility about it that you only ever really find on adverts. Y'know, when the movie companies clear everybody off the beach in order to shoot a couple wandering along a deserted beach on their honeymoon. Few places like that really exist, but this came close!
Maybe I'll be lucky enough to visit again some day. I'd certainly recommend it to anybody thinking of going.
