We recently returned from a cruise that stopped in Belize where we took a horse & buggy ride thru part of town. Because of time constraints, we were unable to do much of anything except a little shopping and our short tour. I was impressed with the friendliness of the people and the guys on our tour and felt we had missed a lot by being on the cruise (I found we spent most of our time at our four ports waiting to get off the ship, tendering to and from, and waiting to get back on the ship.) and really missed seeing things.

We have decided that next year (January 2006) we will pick a place, fly there and actually enjoy the country and the sights. We are leaning very heavily towards Belize and are thinking about flying into Belize City, staying there for 3 or 4 days so we can explore the ruins, the rainforest, etc., then going to somewhere like Ambergreis Key for the last few days and swim, snorkle and just relax. Does this sound like a workable plan?

There may be either 4 or 6 of us -- if its just 4, we're all women who work together (ages ranging from last 30's to late 50's) -- if there are 6 of us, there will be a 30's-something couple with us - so would probable need 2 or 3 rooms -- or a villa. We'll be operating somewhat on a budget so would need something reasonable but nice -- no all inclusive because we want to be able to get out and try different foods and activities.

I would appreciate any info or suggestions on places to stay and things to do.

Thanks

You did miss some great sights in Belize. The tour guide I had was indeed delightful to talk with. The Belize government is strongly supporting ecotourism and tourism in general. They are working to develop the country for tourists.

These are a proud people with a remarkable cultural heritage. Let me put my thinking cap on and I'll write some tour info for you.

When I visited Belize as part of a cruise, we took a shore excursion to Mayan ruins. We took a bus north on the Hummingbird Highway to the ruins. It was a new experience to cross the river on a plank ferry.

The Mayan ruins were exciting to see, especially when you consider that they were built as pyramids.

The bird watching is supposed to be phenomenal in Belize and there are lots of birdwatching tours.

And don't miss the Belize Zoo!
