The Wonderful Cities of Madagascar

As if a trip to Madagascar isn’t exciting enough, you still have to decide what to do once you get there. With a wonderful climate, resorts, and many attractions, there are many choices to make. If, though, you are going to make sure you take in the true essence of Madagascar, you just have to make a trip to Ambohimanga. This former royal capital of Madagascar offers a little bit of everything for the culture curious traveler.

Ambohimanga, also called Blue Hill, was the first capital of the Merina royal family. The area is enclosed with an entrance marked by the traditional gateway. The former palace compound of the King, Andrianampoinimerina is located near the village as well. He ruled from 1787 until 1810, and a visit to his home shows that he lived in what looks sort of like a wooden shed. This is a must see on any trip to Ambohimanga.

One of the interesting facts to note about the city is the variety of names by which it is or has been known. Aside from the name Ambohimanga, it has been called other things. It has been known as the Blue City, The Holy City, and even as The Forbidden City. Additionally, it is surrounded by forest, which gives it an old-world feel in addition to the traditional structures remaining from its days as the Madagascar capital.

If you enjoy country sides and beauty, then a stroll through the rice fields in the Ambohimanga area is worth your time as well. Walking on the dikes that pass through the rice fields will give you some exercise while having an opportunity to witness and experience the culture of the people in the area. Watch them participating in the various activities that relate to their rice cultivation. You will also see brick molding as well as brick baking.

While in the town of Ambohimanga, don’t forget to enjoy the breathtaking views. Many oft the cities in the area, including this one, are located atop big hills. At one time, each hill was its own kingdom with its own kin. Over time, around the 18th century, the hill-kingdoms began to merge into one large kingdom. Ambohimanga was considered to be one of the greatest of these kingdoms and it offers up wonderful views out over the forests and out toward the other hills of the region.

Finally, check out the local markets. Get a feel for local crafts and trade by seeing what the market has to offer. From local cuisine to souvenirs, you can likely find a number of items you want to purchase to remember your trip to Madagascar, and especially your time in Ambohimanga.

This ancient city is just the place to introduce yourself to the culture and excitement of Madagascar, so enjoy the rice fields, the scenery, the history, and the market for at least one day of your trip.
