Western CaribbeanProbably the most famous among other Caribbean destinations, the Western Caribbean islands are a world-famous exotic destination. The Western Caribbean encompasses Costa Maya, Playa del Carmen, Progreso, and Cozumel of Mexico; Roatan of Honduras, Belize City of Belize, George Town in Grand Cayman, Key West in Florida, and Montego Bay and Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

Costa Maya blends old and new, being home to famous Mayan ruins, such as the extraordinary architecture of Majahual and Chaccoben, as well as a new man-made village complete with all the amenities tourists could need. The man-made village has shops, restaurants, and bars. Playa del Carmen is a favorite destination of young ones, as the island is known for its party scene, vibrant nightlife, rustic towns, and exotic beaches.

Progreso is the place for you if you are looking for a tropical destination also famous for its archaeological jewels. Once the site of Mayan civilization, you can find temples with intricate designs, enigmatic temples and plazas, and pyramids. Don’t forget to stop by Cozumel, a shopper’s paradise in this side of the world. Cozumel’s quaint little shops offer not-to-miss bargains on Mexican handicrafts, jewelry, fashion, and numerous other souvenirs.

Roatan is a melting pot of various cultures, including British, Spanish, African, and Paya Indian cultures. This is also the perfect Western Caribbean destination if you’re looking to enjoy water sports and getting close to marine life with snorkeling and diving. The reefs are the second largest in the world, with abundant marine life that include colorful coral and fishes, sharks, and rays. Belize is another destination famed for its marine life, yet another notable aspect of visiting Belize is the historical attractions. Belize is home to significant Mayan temples, including Xunantunich and Altun Ha.

Visit an authentic rum factory in George Town, where you can witness the making and packaging of the Caribbean’s favorite drink. For those with brave hearts, George Town offers more than just snorkeling, but a chance to feed sting rays up close. Key West, Florida, was once called home by famous writer Ernest Hemingway. With the bright architecture, charming sidewalk cafes, and artistic attractions, it’s no wonder why.

Montego Bay is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the Caribbean. It’s also the site of a famous ghost haunting, that of Rose Hall, so if you’re up for an adventure, head over to the 6,000 square acre sugar plantation. The flourishing greenery at Ocho Rios lures visitors to its famous falls, which provides a refreshing break and some exercise to burn off the irresistible Caribbean food.

The Western Caribbean blend of various regions in the Americas gives the traveler endless options for adventure and excitement. The islands’ rich history is resplendent in the amazing colonial districts, giving tourists a sense of the local cultural heritage. With the islands so close to each other, it’s easy to enjoy a little of everything to get the most out of your trip.
