Southern Caribbean

Southern CaribbeanThe Southern Caribbean is a group of small islands that are bound by St. Lucia in the north, Trinidad and Tobago to its south, and Barbados and Aruba to its west and east respectively. These beautiful islands are a result of millions of years of volcanic history, and today are considered luxurious tropical destinations. Tourists from around the world visit the Southern Caribbean each year, with its most popular attractions being the white sand beaches with crystal clear turquoise waters.

The unique and spectacular beauty of the Caribbean islands have been known since early history. The Europeans fell in love with these breathtaking islands first during the 1400’s, which enticed them to claim some. This is the reason why European influence, most prominently from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and France, can still be felt and seen today, a trait that adds to the charm that makes the Caribbean culture unique to others in the world. The European architecture present in the many historical sites throughout the islands bring about a nostalgic feeling.

Many activities are lined up for anyone who visits the Southern Caribbean. For the more active, there’s golf, hunting, horseback riding, biking, kayaking, and fishing. For those who want to see awesome marine life up close, you can also swim with turtles and dolphins. Day charters, helicopter rides, seafaris, eco tours and cruises are great ways to see the best of the islands from different angles.

The interesting combination of old-world colonialism and present day Caribbean culture results in fantastic cuisine. The islands are dotted with numerous restaurants where one can sample mouth-watering local and traditional fare unlike any other in the world. There are quaint little shops as well where you can find handmade souvenirs to take home as memorabilia from your exciting Southern Caribbean excursions. There are also upmarket shops in certain districts where you can purchase internationally made goods.
While planning your trip to the Southern Caribbean, you might want to go island hopping and plan ahead for what it is you want to experience. Antigua and Aruba are best known for their beaches, Martinique and Guadalupe for nature hikes in unspoiled terrain where you can see lush tropical rain forest to exhilarating volcanic mountains. Curacao and Bonaire are great for snorkeling and diving because of the abundant marine life and colorful fish. Dominica, also known as Garden of Eden, and Grenada are popular for their charming, small-town appeal. St. Bart on the other hand has an undeniable French feel that might lead the visitor to think they were on the Mediterranean instead of the Caribbean, with its selection of chic restaurants, boutiques and marvelous beaches.
There is something for tourists of every age and taste. This part of the Caribbean is well-developed enough to suit the discerning tastes of the seasoned traveler, yet quaint enough to ensure a unique and memorable vacation.
