Sometimes known as the “Emerald Isle” of the Caribbean, Montserrat is a beautiful tropical island destination. With much of the southern part of the island uninhabited due to the Soufriere Hills volcano, the north is the real destination for most. Part of the charm of this Caribbean gem is that it is reachable only from Antigua via ferry. One stop you must make on any trip through Monteserrat is to Rendezvous Bay on the southwestern coast. This picturesque area just kisses the southern part of the inhabited portion of the island, but is a must-visit for a number of reasons.
With the only white beach in all of Monteserrat, the beauty and luxury of Rendezvous Bay is what will likely first grab your attention. Accessible only by boat or a hike from little Bay, the isolation of this beach area is what gives it much of its charm. Once you are there, you will find some of the most beautiful views and greatest water activities in all of the Caribbean islands.
If you choose to hike to Rendezvous beach, you will be treated to spectacular views along the way. Make sure to pack a picnic for this long but worthwhile hike. If you arm yourself with a good picnic meal, plenty of ice cold water, and a desire to experience the less “busy” parts of the island, you will find that the hike is worth every step you take if for no other reason than the views.
If you choose to boat over, you can still enjoy the island views. Whether you charter a boat, rent a boat, or take advantage of an island cruise, you will be treated to the beauty of the island between Little Bay and Rendezvous Bay and Beach. Once you arrive, though, you will still want to take in more.
Consider a scuba dive or snorkeling expedition into the beautiful coral reef in the bay. There are a number of diving schools and touring companies that can help you access the equipment and locations you need to see the bay’s exotic and exciting flora and fauna.
After a long day of hiking, boating, and diving, you can enjoy local restaurants in the area. Predominantly local cuisine, you can truly have a Caribbean island experience. Dine outside one of the local eateries and enjoy a lovely sunset as you partake in the local flavors and island atmosphere. A romantic walk on the white sand beach will complete your day of island beauty.
