Security Abroad While On Your Cruise
Security is a crucial issue for any kind of travel. Cruises are no exception, where we should take the extra precaution to be careful and always wary of our surroundings. Cruise ships often have tight security measures, to avoid theft, losses, and to give guests a generally fun yet safe trip. Surveillance cameras monitor every area within the cruise ship, taking note of any suspicious persons or behavior.
The most important document you need to take care of when going on a cruise is your passport. This is a crucial document that proves who you are, and provides you access to other countries during ports of call. Prior to leaving your trip, make sure that you make at least two copies of your passport in case of any losses. It would also be wise to leave a copy of this at home in cases of emergencies.
A word of advice, don’t travel with fancy looking suitcases. They may attract attention and will cause thieves to think that the contents are expensive and pricey, leading you to be a victim of theft. In the same way, don’t flash fancy jewelry onboard or wear expensive items. The less attention you draw to yourself, the better your chances against theft.
Just like being in any hotel, many members of the staff will have access to your cabin. It is best to bring around your valuables wherever you go on the ship. For instance, during cleaning times the door to your cabin will be left open for a few hours, exposing your personal items. For jewelry and cash, you might want to check them in with the cruise liner’s safe. Always make sure you bring around your key with you and protect it, because anyone who stumbles upon it can easily access your cabin and all its contents.
Bringing your family along will entail explaining to them important rules that they should practice. Children may especially vulnerable to revealing information to strangers whom they think are being friendly if adult supervision is not present, so ensure communication to the whole family. Remind them to never give out information to anyone on the ship, or to give their cabin keys to anyone. Should they get lost, assign meeting places in safe areas within the ship, such as the lobby or the registration desk where your children can safely wait for you. Whenever you leave your child in a certain location, make sure that supervisors from the ship are always there to watch.
Technically, security onboard a cruise entails the same issues as you would have at home. Practice the same caution as you would in your local bar when you’re in the ship’s lounge. Don’t accept drinks from strangers, and be sure that it comes directly from the hand of the bartender. Awareness is always key, and be extremely careful about who you make friends with onboard. Sneaky people on board will grab every opportunity to dupe you if you aren’t careful.
