What Cruise Clothes To Pack
There are certain things you should consider before packing your clothes for a cruise:
- Length of the cruise
- Itinerary
- Ship activities you will be doing
Cruises range anywhere from four days up to three weeks. Naturally, the longer your cruise the more you will have to pack. However, the other two factors can help you make more practical decisions when it comes to packing your clothes for a cruise. Your itinerary will affect your clothing options. For example, if you are going on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise, the tropical weather will require lighter clothing and beachwear, while an Alaskan cruise would require layers and thicker clothing. However, if you are going on a repositioning cruise, you will have to pack something for extreme opposite climates. If you’re going on a cruise that will last over a week, you can still pack lightly and take advantage of the ship’s laundry services so your luggage won’t be too heavy.
For a warm weathered tropical cruise, basic clothing to pack includes light tops, a variety of shirts including sleeveless, short sleeves, and long sleeves, pants, walking shoes, and rubber slippers for poolside and beach activities. Don’t forget to bring swimwear as well, so you can enjoy the tropical waters and the beautiful warm weather you’ll be experiencing. It’s generally easier to pack for tropical cruises because clothing is lighter and takes up much less space. It’s best to pack versatile light clothes that can go from day to night, such as dresses.
On the other hand, going to a cold weather cruise would require basic clothing that would keep you covered for use within the ship. This means packing basic short sleeves and long sleeves, pants, and jackets for when you walk around the ship’s deck. When you disembark, you will need to use sweaters and layers, possibly even boots to keep you warm.
Careful consideration of the activities you’ll be doing on the ship is a useful way of narrowing down what clothes you’ll be packing. If you’ll be partaking in the cruise’s formal dinners, be sure to pack formal evening wear and tuxedoes for the men. Cruise liners that go to both warm and cool destinations usually have indoor and outdoor pools, so it’s still wise to bring a swimsuit or two even if you aren’t going to a port of call with a beach.
Cruise ships have many bars, lounges, and restaurants that have varying dress codes and themes. For all your days onboard you might want to try out each of them, so it would be advisable to also bring a variety of clothing, because some are casual and the others dressier.
For lazy days on the boat, such as reading, checking out the library, or simply exploring the ship, it’s recommended you pack comfortable clothing and decent shoes. Linen or loose pants and breezy pants are an ideal outfit for comfortably spending days at sea. The most important tip is to research ahead of time about your cruise’s amenities and activities, so you can pack accordingly.
