Puerto Vallarta started life as a simple fishing village and not the major resort city that is currently in place. The area had received little attention until the film The Night of the Iguana was filmed here with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The world watched as the steamy affair between the two escalated and the viewers were kept up to date by the pictures taken by the rogue photographers camped out. Following the film the area was taken to the next level. Several large companies moved in and started to take over the village little by little. The later filming of the movie Predator in the outer jungle regions would seal the fate and foreign investors from the world over came in to make the city the thriving area it is now.

Water Sports
The resort locale that is Puerto Vallarta is full of scenic areas for fishing. This was the original use for the area and today massive charter boats carry hundreds out to sea in search of the big catch. There are some commercial fishing areas as well that are tended to by the Germans and the Asians. Surfing is very popular and some of the best boards are made right in the area. This draws the crowds to take the tours and then try out their new boards. Wind surfing is also very popular and maintains one of the largest industries in the city.

Island Diversity
It is the foreign investors who are most responsible for the boom of this city and they maintain a large part of the society in general. Germans are a majority, with the native Mexicans running a close second. United States based people are third in the rankings with the Oriental crowd rounding out the group.
