Sicily

Sicily is most notable for being the largest island in the Mediterranean and still be a part of another country. Italy is the official owner of Sicily but many people still consider the island to be a country by itself. This can be seen in the island itself with the fact that it has two official languages, Italian and Sicilian. The second is a strange dialect that borrowed from many other languages, like Greek, and cam mostly from the past civilizations that have ruled the island over the years. Over the course of time the island changed hands more times than any other island currently known. The fierce battles that were waged to gain control show that this was a highly sought after area in the old world. For one reason, there was rumors that the island was rich with gold, which ended up being untrue but that did not stop the countries from fighting for control.

Water Sports
There is little that one can not do in the area that is Sicily but water sports have never taken hold on the island like in others. There is a lot of people who enjoy the fishing and such, but this is the limit of the known water sports that are actively sought out. This is most likely due to the beauty and romance of the island. Swimming is known to take place on the many beaches but they are never as packed as other island beaches are. You should have no trouble finding a nice quiet place for a dip around the island on most days.

Island Diversity
There is little in the way of diversity on the island. Most of the population is Italian and the native Sicilians that were original to the island. Some of the Greeks have made a home here as well as the English but nothing like the other islands in the area.

Activities
In Sicily it is all about the food in most areas of this island. There are more eateries in this area then any other that serve some of the finest in Italian cuisine. You may also want to take a tour of the island and learn about the rich history of the area and all that has gone on here. Some of the most famous people in the world are from Sicily and the locals have no problem telling you about them.

The Old World Charm of Sicily

One of the most populated of the Mediterranean islands, Sicily has retained an air of history and old world charm. From coast to coast, Sicily keeps the past alive while interspersing the conveniences of the modern world.
