Cyprus

Cyprus island, the third largest island of the Mediterranean, has had a history that myths are made of. For a long period of time the island was not inhabited by any one group of people. This left it open to pretty much anyone who found the island and it was widely used over the centuries by many groups of historical significance. These groups left things behind which led to the final occupation of the island and it’s large population. During the Crusades the island was used as a staging area for battles and to muster the troops that were used to spread the word during the Crusades. This led to many people being left behind at certain times that led to some of the families that still inhabit the island today. Pirates used Cyprus for centuries as well. Needing a base to stash their plunder they would set up secret camps on the island and bury the treasure they had stolen from other people all over the world. This was good for many over the years as the pirates many times would lose in a battle and never return for the plunder. To this day the island is sought out by treasure hunters from all over the world hoping to strike it rich with a big find.

Water Sports
Water sports are not as popular on Cyprus as they are on other tropical islands. Many people do use the island for surfing but the sport has never caught on as well as many would have hoped. The surfing is very limited due to the climate and weather patterns that are not prime for waves of any size. There is still enough people that surf that a tourist could find some suitable players in the game if need be. Fishing is big around Cyprus from a hobby standpoint and from the industrial area as well. Many people find the fishing to be grand and the number of charters is enormous to say the least. Look to the hotel for the best in charters as the price of your stay may include a fishing charter. Swimming and diving are also very popular on Cyprus but not nearly to the degree of other tropical islands in the area.

Island Diversity
Because of the rich history of the island, Cyprus is diverse in a way that many islands could only dream of. The largest part of the population is Greek but each of the civilizations that have taken up residence here have left behind a part of themselves. People from the world over call Cyprus home and the climate is very inviting to all who visit. Expect to see a thriving British and Italian culture base on the island in many of the areas.

Activities
Activities on the island are normally related to the history of Cyprus. A reenactment of the crusades era is a favorite among the tourists as an actual battle is staged for the enjoyment of all. Many of the areas also feature some historical pirate exhibits and temples for the Goddess Aphrodite are prevalent across the island.
