Corsica island is owned by France in a deal that allowed France to own the island after the area went bankrupt under the direction of Genoa. The treaty of Versailles gave the ownership to France which ended the independent status of the island in 1755. At the time, Corsica had its own governmental structure that was elected directly from the population. Life was good but corruption soon took over. The island started to see a downturn and then faced with being bankrupt they allowed for the inclusion of France. This has led to prosperity for the island that is now considered to be one of the most beautiful islands in the area. The official language is obviously French, but there is also Corsican, which is the native tongue still spoken in many of the villages. The Corsican language is not a dialect of French but another language all together. While it is considered to be a dead language, it can be heard all over the island and it is being taught in schools all over the island as well.

Water Sports
Most of the water sports that can be found on Corsica have to do with swimming in some way. The surfing is not all that great because the waves tend to not be as high as most surfers would like them. This does not mean that surfing is not taught. The area is actually very good for the beginner in the surfing hobby and many of the areas have places that will sell surf boards and teach one how to surf as well. Swimming is very popular and is the primary reason why so many come to the island. The water is warm and the beaches are out of this world. Drinks are served right on the beach in most of the areas around the world as this is a huge source of income for many of the residents. Most often you will find hundreds of drink vendors all over the beaches who are more than willing to serve. Fishing is a big industry on Corsica and the charter boats run seven days a week all year round. The fishing is good but not the best to be found. Bulk fishing is bigger and many of the residents rely on this for survival.

Island Diversity
Most of the island is inhabited by the French but the island has a fair share of others about as well. The British maintain a large population on Corsica and many wealthy business men call the island home. Italians are also fond of the island as a sort of retreat from life as well and some of the largest families on Corsica can trace their roots to Italy and the many who have visited. There is also the very large native population. Villages across the island are full and make for an attractive tour. The Corsican language and its many variations are spoken in the villages.

Activities
Most often you will find that the activities on the island are related to the history of the area. Guided tours through the oldest parts of the island are highly popular. One can also spend the day touring the villages and buying unique handmade items from the residents.
