St Martin

The island that is St Martin has a bit of a sorted history to say the least. Originally discovered in the early 1500’s, St Martin became a staging and plunder ground for pirates operating in the area. This would eventually come to an end as Spain took control. The island’s primary use was as a quarantine zone for the ill. The ravaging diseases of the time were taking their toll on Spain as a whole so they started moving all the sick to the island where they would eventually die and stop the spread of the disease. The island floated in limbo for many years after the fall of the Spanish empire until it was taken over privately by a religious organization that uses it currently.
