Anegada, one of the British Virgin Islands, got it’s name from the spanish word meaning “drowned land”. This is very accurate as this tiny island’s highest point is only about 28 feet above sea level! It is the only coral island in the bvi chain, and is only 11 miles long, and 3 miles wide. Despite this, it is still one of the larger of the bvi islands, but has the least population, being only about 200. The majority of people live in the main town which is named “The Settlement”.

Anegada is also framed by Horseshoe Reef, which is one of the world’s longest being 18 miles! There are also many saltwater ponds and mangroves which are home to many exotic birds including flocks of flamingoes.

Water Sports
Though small, Anegada is a mecca for water sports of virtually any kind, but especially for snorkelling and diving due to the beautiful reef system. It is also wonderful for sport fishing and kayaking. Last, but not least, the beaches are endless–literally. You can walk miles and not see another “human” footprint. One of the loveliest is Loblolly Beach. So take advantage of peace and quiet on these soft stretches of sand!

Island Diversity
In the town of “The Settlement” there are conch shell piles that indicate the presence of Arawak indians. These areas in the BVI were also a favorite hideout for pirates hoping to ransack ships coming through. Many of the islanders are descendants of slaves freed by their owners and allowed to settle their own land.

Activities
Anegada is quiet and relaxed. Relax on the beaches or play in the water, or take in interesting historical facts at the Anegada Museum. Enjoy the peace of this laid back paradise!
