Papiomento means welcome . Welcome to this friendly island that lies to the North of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea. Covering only 193 sq km it is the size of Washington DC it is flat with the highest point, Mount Jamanota only reaching 188metres into the clear blue skies. Water Sports
An ideal destination for relaxation, simply lying on the beach and gaining an enviable tan is how many choose to spend their time on this island. For the keen fisherman a variety of Atlantic game fish can be caught year-round. Sailfish, white and blue marlin, shark and barracuda are inhabitants of the waters here. Island Diversity
Aruba’s first inhabitants were the Caquetios Indians. Evidence of this population dates back to about 1000AD. The ancient symbols painted on the limestone caves bear testament to this and provide a worthy trip off the beach for the visitor. In 1499 the Spanish arrived and used the native Indians as slaves in Santo Domingo, where they were put to work in copper mines. In 1636 the Dutch took possession and remained in control for the next 200 years. In 1986 Aruba became a separate, autonomous member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Movement toward full independence was halted at Aruba’s request in 1990.

Activities
However, Aruba is wakening to the call of the adventurous and now outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and climbing are available. Since its introduction in the 1940’s by Trinidadian immigrants who came to work in Aruba, Carnival has become a festivity that reveals the many influences that have shaped the Aruban society today. Through tourism, industry and migration Aruba has grown to become a multi-cultural diverse character. The Aruban community, over the years, has absorbed bits of cultural elements from countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Holland and the United States and transformed it into a diverse mix of colour and rhythm, that is Aruba’s world famous Carnival celebration. The preparation for this breathtaking celebration consists of nearly two months of costume and float making, queen elections, Calypso and Rumba contests in anticipation of the decadent Carnival parades. Native talents come alive in the form of vibrant costumes and magnificent floats that hypnotise the visitors and locals alike.
