San Salvador Island is located 450 miles southeast of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It is five miles wide, and 12 miles long with a population of about 1,000. The island has a rich history since it was the site of Columbus first landfall in 1492, and he gave the island it’s name–which means “Holy Savior”. Though the pace of life here is very laid back, there are still many things to keep one busy during their stay.

Water Sports
The water here is so clear, divers can see up to 150 feet! There are many reefs, and old shipwrecks to be discovered either by divers or snorkellers. So, no matter what your level of expertise is when it comes to diving, you can find something to enjoy. You can also find some great game fishing in San Salvador. There are many tours and guides who can show you to the best spots for deep sea fishing while you are here, so be sure to check around for the best prices. Of course, if you are just looking to relax, there are plenty of secluded beaches available too!

Island Diversity
The original inhabitants of the island were the Lucayan indians. Later a British buccaneer named George Watling came to the island, and renamed it after himself. In the 1920’s it’s name returned to the original given by Columbus. British Loyalists also settled here on the island, and the ruins of their plantations can be seen today.

Activites
The main settlement here is Cockburn Town where a museum can be found that includes articfacts dating back to the Lucayan indians. Discover the many ruins of the old plantations, Lucayan indian sites, or visit Dixon Hill Lighthouse. You can also find some great local markets to shop at and find some great handicrafts and art to take home with you. There are also many great restaraunts to enjoy some of the local cusine and great sea food dishes.
