Tongan National Cultural Center
Hotels in Tonga
The Kingdom of Tonga encompasses one hundred and seventy six islands, and all of them are beautiful. No matter what your ideal island getaway is, you can find it in Tonga! Whale watching, diving, hiking, sailing, bird watching or people watching—the opportunities are endless, and you will wish your time here was endless, too.
The Tongan National Culture Centre is definitely a must-do experience on your island vacation. The people of Tonga take great pride in their culture, and when you experience it for yourself, you will see why. And unlike many places that ‘dress up' their traditions and create special tourist attractions, Tongans do not. Whether you are at the open air markets, strolling down the beautiful sandy beaches, or browsing through the shops, you are experiencing Tonga just as Tongans have for decades. Nothing is fake or played up for tourists.
But one place where the cultural experience can be seen at its very best is at the Tongan National Cultural Centre. This one location will give you many distinct glimpses of the unique Tongan history and culture. You can visit a museum, purchase islander made handicrafts, be invited to take part in a kava ceremony, see some of the best dancers in the land perform traditional Tongan dances, and even experience the tastes and scents of a genuine Tongan feast. At the Centre you can also trace the lineage of the Nobles of the Realm and see local historical artifacts. And don't forget to have your picture taken beside the 40ft model of the famous Tongan Kalia, and discover exactly why Kalia is so famous! The adjacent gallery offers contemporary art and genuine cultural handicrafts. See tapa and Canoe making, wood carving, basket weaving and mat making. And if you are lucky, you might get to try your hand at doing a little weaving of your own!
If you stay for the traditional feast, you are in for a treat. Taste traditional recipes and try foods you have probably never had before. The feasting is generally followed by singing and dancing, and you will greatly enjoy this entertainment. Tonga is an extremely talented musical nation. The singing, whether by a small group or a choir of a thousand voices, is justifiably renowned. The "lakalaka" is the traditional Tongan dance, and is performed by anywhere from twenty to several hundred dancers. You might be reminded of Hawaiian hula dancing, although the Tongan dance is distinctly different. Each "lakalaka" tells a different story and is acted out to the accompaniment of the dancers singing the story. Tongan dancing is reserved and graceful, with the focus of attention on the hands and feet rather than the body. This relaxing and beautiful music and dancing will linger in your memory as a truly magical evening.
Reservations are greatly recommended, but if space is available, they are not strictly necessary. However, especially during the busy tourist season, seats are claimed quickly, so don't rely on luck! You won't want to miss any of the fascinating happenings at the Tongan National Cultural Centre.
