The Historic Stone Town of Zanzibar

The first thing you will notice about Stone Town in Zanzibar is that it is an actual thriving community, where its citizens live and work and lead their lives, despite the onslaught of tourists to the region. Keeping that in mind and being respectful of the people here will help you in your exploration of this unique and fascinating community.

Many of the residences of Stone Town were built during the time when the community was a very important trading center on the Indian Ocean. That was 200 years ago, and much of the city remains as it was then. It is a centre that simply can’t be overlooked during your trip to Zanzibar.

The bustling marketplace in Stone Town is a must to visit, even if you aren’t much of a shopper. The sounds and colors of the market are vibrant and lively. This is where just about anything you are able to think of can be bought and sold. People come from miles around to buy things that are unavailable in their own villages, or to sell items and produce from all over the land.

Another interesting place to visit while in Stone Town is the House of Wonders. It is a unique looking square building with a large clock tower, pillars and balconies galore, and it is several stories tall. Built in 1883, it was the first building in Zanzibar to sport electric light and an electric lift, hence the reason for the name. Originally, The House of Wonders was a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash. There are currently plans in the works to turn it into a National Museum.

Right next door to the House of Wonders is an Arab Fort. This is a structure that is open to the public, so it is a great place to explore. It is difficult to miss with its high walls and battlements. There is an open air theatre here, as well as a variety of places to souvenir shop, making it a great spot to accumulate memories of your vacation to Zanzibar.

You will want to be sure to visit the Old Dispensary while you are making your way through the Town. Now the local Cultural Centre, it was once a dispensary during colonial times. Having been in disrepair for sometime, the building has now been beautifully restored and serves as a grand example of the historic architecture of Stone Town.

Just off the shore, not far from Stone Town is Prison Island. This destination makes for a wonderful day-trip from the Town. Once a prison for wayward slaves, it is now a prime location for snorkeling and sunbathing. You can even observe the giant tortoises that make their home on the island!

Stone Town in Zanzibar can be just one of many attractions you visit while vacationing in Zanzibar or it can be a complete vacation all on its own. There are so many places to see, and so many things to do here that there really will never be time accomplish them all. However, it will certainly be fun and exciting to try!
