Shopping Ashore

For many cruise passengers, the chance to shop ashore in exotic destinations is one of the biggest attractions of their vacation. After all, when you visit a country that is the cradle of a particular art or has a reputation for fine wines, it would be a shame to go home without that special item that will be a treasured reminder of your trip.

Sometimes getting things you really like at the best prices, depends on where a shop is located. Those closest to where you disembark, are not always the best choices, because vendors know what ships in port are only there for a short time, and take advantage of that limited shopping time by visitors.

You’ll do far better by visiting the local markets and shopping districts, where there is more competition for the tourist dollar. Remember too, that not all ports of call have tax-free benefits, and local charges may apply.

If a town or area is known for their woven rugs, by all means shop around the same as you would at home. Commercial retail stores will be less likely to offer discounts or bargains than vendors in a market, or in their own small stalls along a beach or esplanade. Individual vendors are your best bet for bargaining, and if you read travel reviews for different destinations, you’ll find that previous cruisers will indicate how likely you are to be able to bargain. In some places it is expected, where in others it might be considered offensive. Largely though, it becomes a real art, enjoyed by buyer and seller alike. The point is to get what you want for the best price. But…if you see something that really takes your breath away, and isn’t going to break the bank, go ahead and buy it. When the difference is only a few dollars, it fades in significance to the pleasure you’ll get from owning it.
