Rarotonga is the capital and center of the Cook Islands, and even though the island is only thirty two kilometers across, it is the heart of the country. The island is crowned by high mountains covered in lush, tropical rainforest, that slope down to sparkling white sand beaches and beautiful ocean views. Because it is so small, there are only two main roads on Rarotonga. The Ara Tapu sealed road encircles the island and passes through the scenic villages and past the gorgeous beaches. Or, if you want to take a scenic journey through the center of the island, you can choose to drive along the older inland road, Te Ara o Toi. While driving along this older road, you will be enchanted by views of ancient fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands.
Avarua is the main town on the island and is the commercial heart of the Cook Islands. During business hours, Avarua has a friendly, bustling atmosphere together with a good selection of shops, banks, cafes and visitor facilities. It is also the main port and host to many cruising yachts. Even at its busiest, Avarua has a relaxed, laid back atmosphere that invites you to relax, unwind, and enjoy the beauty around you to its fullest. The Cook Islands Visitor Information Centre is located in downtown Avarua, only steps away from the attractions.. Visitors are warmly welcomed and offered a variety of information and maps to make your visit the best it can be.
Although most people, tourists and residents alike, prefer to travel around Rarotonga on bicycles, scooters, or motorbikes, there are automobiles available to rent during your stay. Just be careful on those narrow roads! Also, if you would prefer to leave the worries of driving to someone more familiar with the roads and destinations, you can also choose to ride the island bus. This is a very low-cost option used by tourists and residents, and runs on a schedule at all hours. For a low fee, it will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on the island.
