Enjoying The Natural East Timor Hotels in East Timor

East Timor, or Timor-Leste as it is also known, is an emerging nation. Technically considered part of Southeast Asia, East Timor is located approximately 400 miles from Australia. The flavor of the Island is an eclectic mix of Asian and Portuguese. The geography is diverse, ranging from beautiful beaches, rice paddies and majestic mountains. Because of this, there is a wide variety of activities to choose from.

Backpacking and trekking are well suited for our countries' characteristics. This is a good alternative for the adventurous to really appreciate both nature and tradition. For those who enjoy walking, hiking, and mountaineering, you may trek over rugged terrain and forest to the summit of East Timor's highest mountain. Beginning from Hatubuiliku (Hato Builico) this should be a 2-hour round trip. Freshwater springs run all year; the rainiest month being October. A 6-hour trek will take you to Loelaco Mountain, located near Maliana, Bobonaru Town and Marobo. There, you will get a chance to see the region's characteristic traditional cone-shaped house. Mountains and deep valleys make up the stunning alpine scenery, dotted with traditional Mambae houses, farms and lovely pousadas (guest houses). Sightseeing excursions and expeditions to visit the country are available, as well as car and motorbike rentals.

Dili (Díli) is the capital of Timor-Leste and it is mainly a commercial and administrative center. There are a few Portuguese touches such as villa-lined beach roads and the ruins of an old fort built in 1627. The long stretch of waterfront with the Palácio do Governador nearby remains a place of commerce and leisure. This is a popular focal point for evening walks and weekends. A massive statue of Jesus Christ dominates the headland hilltop at Cape Fatucama. The best-known beaches in Dili (Díli) are in a sheltered cove known as Areia Branca. Ataúru (Ataúro) Island, which is visible from the waterfront, is becoming increasingly popular as a sightseeing excursion site. The best way to appreciate Timor-Leste's natural beauty is to rent a car and take a scenic drive along the spectacular coastline to Manatutu (Manatuto), Baukau (Baucau) and Kom (Com) in Lospalos.

Wildlife and marine life abound. Dolphins are common in the waters all around, particularly in the Manatutu, Carimbala, Likisa districts. Large groups of migrating whales are often seen in the deep waters between Ataúru Island and Dili. Timor-Leste has mile after mile of pristine coral reefs, which are alive with a vast diversity of marine creatures such as turtles, sharks, whales and colorful tropical fish. This is the backdrop for some of the best diving in the world. There are several diving companies running scuba safaris to sites in Dili and the surrounding areas.

Timor-Leste is home to 25 protected bird species, ranging from eagles to parakeets. These birds can be spotted throughout the country, especially in the Lautein District. Lautein also boasts one of the country's largest lakes, Ira Lalaro.
