Cruising Accommodations
Start Booking Your Dream Cruise
The most basic accommodation aboard a cruise ship, starts with inside staterooms. These are a single room, on the inside of any given deck, with no windows. As a rule of thumb, most cruise lines offer the very basic amenities of twin beds, which can usually be put together to make a single queen size bed. You'll also have a small vanity area, a closet, and a bathroom with a shower only. Depending on the cruise line, there could be large inside staterooms available that have slightly more floor space, and occasionally a sofa, which can be used as a pullout bed to sleep children, or another adult. But do take into account, the total number of people and how much time you'll be spending in the room, because it can get quite crowded and unpleasant for all, if you're tired and grumpy.
The next level up in staterooms is one with an oceanview. This is usually either a large size porthole style window, or else a “picture” window. Be careful when booking these, as many ships have decks where some oceanview rooms have obstructed or partially obstructed views. These also have basic amenities, usually with a sitting area, and slightly more floor space than inside staterooms. Again, the sofa may provide extra sleeping space, or on some ships, there may be enough square footage to allow for a rollaway or Pack ‘N Play for children.
From oceanview staterooms, you can go to one with a private balcony. These have the same amenities, although on some ships, this category may offer a full tub and shower bathroom. The private balcony is generally not that large, but does allow you the opportunity to enjoy fresh ocean breezes, or a night under the stars.
Above the basic accommodations, you're looking at suites and luxury accommodations, which are for those who like more space, or more amenities in the way of entertainment, service and other features. Browse the website for the cruise line you'd like to book on, and consider whether the cost is justified, if you don't plan to spend that much time in your room. On the other hand, for families traveling together, that extra space is worth every penny.
