In Borneo's many national parks, you will see a unique blend of wildlife and plant life that you cannot find anywhere else. Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of an Orangutan. If you do not see one in the wild, visit one of the Orangutan rehabilitation centers, which are located in Sabah, Sarawak, or Kalimantan. At these centers you can learn more about the attempt being made to keep these amazing animals alive in their natural habitat.
Be sure to visit Sukau, located on the Kinabatangan Rives. Here you can see Proboscis Monkeys in their natural habitat. These amusing creatures only live in the trees along the rivers of Borneo. Here you will also see the largest group of elephants on Borneo. You can take an afternoon jungle river cruise down the Kinabatangan, and in the afternoon you will probably see some of the elephants. There is much wildlife in this area, including Orangutan, macaques, monkeys, gibbons, Sumatran rhinoceros, and many more. Plan to spend at least a day exploring this great location, but watch out for crocodiles!
The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a must-see for those visiting Borneo. Set along the Danum River in Sabah, this is a great place to begin exploring the lowland rainforest. You can enjoy good food and exhibits that teach about the ecology of the rainforest. Do not be surprised if you see one of the 275 species of birds that live their hovering nearby. From the Lodge, you can visit a newly discovered Dusun burial site, take walks with experienced naturalists through the rainforest, explore the canopy walkway that takes you above the trees, visit many waterfalls, or take an adventurous jungle trek through the Orangutan habitat. If you desire to see much wildlife, plan on spending at least three days at the Lodge.
The state of Sabah is famous for white sand beaches, and this is a great place to come to enjoy some of the sites and sounds of the ocean. Spend a day swimming, water skiing, or scuba diving in the beautiful waters. The water here is clear and has beautiful coral formations. Or just spend the day on the beach soaking up some sun. You will see a large variety of sea birds while on the beaches of Sabah.
In the state of Sarawak you will want to visit the Bako National Park. Here you can see wild boars, monitor lizards and many species of birds. Nearby you will be enthralled by the culture of the water villages around the park. In Bako National Park you will see swampland and forests, all in one place. Actually, some say that Bako National Park houses all the vegetation that grows on Borneo!
