Abacos located 200 miles east of Florida’s Palm Beach, is the most popular of the Bahamas Out Islands. It consists of the Islands of Great Abaco, Little Abaco, and several cays surrounding over 120 miles. The Abacos are located at the most northern part of Bahamas, and is considered the country’s second largest island.

Several miles of the beautiful beaches are protected by an unbelievable barrier reef, and the turqoise water is alive with fish and dolphin! A must see is Hope Town Harbour where the British Light House Service built the island’s famous lighthouse. The village is much like a quaint English fishing village, and boasts a tiny 300 residents. The Queen’s highway, which is the village’s main street is only 8 feet wide, and no cars are allowed!
For a special treat try some freshly baked Bahamian bread, or the key lime pie!

Water Sports
One of the world’s top beaches is at Treasure Cay, or check out Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park. Abaco is considered the “sailing capital of the world” so if you have a taste for salt water and wind, definitely do this! If you love snorkeling or diving, this is a great place to go! Check out Mermaid Reef in Marsh Harbour, or be sure there are miles of reef to explore to your heart’s content! Or just enjoy the myriad of beautiful beaches, and lazily count the dolphins…!

Island Diversity

For some interesting insight as to the history of Abaco, go to the Wyannie Malone Musuem in Hope Town. There you can learn about the earliest settlers who arrived in the 1700’s. Most of the present inhabitants of the island descend from the Loyalists who deserted the United States when Britain lost the revolutionary war. The accent of the residents still has the pleasant ring of old England!

Activities

There are many things of interest to explore on Abaco. If you love horses, there are descendants of horses brought by Columbus located on Treasure Cay. If you are interested in birding, take advantage of seeing Abaco National Park. This park boasts a nesting are for the Abaco Parrot. If you like exploring on your own, the roads are good, and you can rent a car to roam the 100 mile stretch at your leisure!
