Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea. Located south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola, its capital city is Kingston. The indigenous Taino people named the island Xaymaca, meaning the “land of springs” or “land of wood and water”. Christopher Columbus used Jamaica as his family’s private estate after his landing there in 1494. It is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada.

Jamaica is the third largest Caribbean island, and the fifth largest country. The inland mountains are surrounded by a narrow coastal plain. Most cities are located on the coast. The climate of Jamaica is tropical, hot and humid on the plain and more temperate inland.

Water Sports
Jamaica boasts over 100 rivers, many of which are still uncharted territory! The island is famous for bamboo rafting and exciting white water rafting sites are always being discovered. The are also great spots for diving on Jamaica’s north coast. Additionally, the waters off Kingston are scattered with many historical wrecks from throughout history, just waiting to be explored!

Island Diversity
Jamaica is rich in culture, including music and literature. The vibrant music genres reggae, ska, mento, rock steady, dub, dance hall and ragga all originated in Jamaica’s urban recording industry. The legendary Bob Marley was born in Jamaica, and remains a well respected music icon. The Rastafari movement was founded in Jamaica, a message which Marley’s music spread throughout the world.
